3 Men and a Mom: Finding our Polish Family. Day 9

May 3

We arrived back in Kraków this afternoon and Zenon left us at our hotel.  It was hard saying goodbye to Zenon – he had become part of our family during this adventure and it feels strange without him now.

After checking into our hotel we quickly headed out to explore the Old Town central district, or Stare Miasto. As with most big cities, it was a mixture of grand historical buildings and touristy shops (I did break down and buy some trinkets to bring back home as gifts).  Today was by far the coldest day for us in Poland – we’d been lucky with very warm sunshine most days.

The district was especially busy today because it is a national holiday: Constitution Day. The holiday celebrates the declaration of the Constitution of May 3, 1791. This is considered one of the most important achievements in the history of Poland, it’s been called “the first constitution of its type in Europe” and referred to as the world’s second oldest constitution.

We’ve had our share of holidays during this visit: May 1 was Labor Day, May 2 was Flag Day, and now May 3 is Constitution Day. In addition, May 2 is considered The Day of Poles Abroad – very appropriate for my Mother, brother and I to celebrate here in Poland!

Another great meal of pierogis tonight – I am trying to get my fill while in Poland because at home in San Jose they are nowhere to be found.
